Each Person Is Important Although people who become homeless do not fit one general description, they all have one thing in common…they are in need and can be served with Christian love and care. Homeless people of all races, creeds, and national origin are welcomed and assisted on a non-discriminatory basis at Pacific Garden Mission. No one is ever turned away. History The Pacific Garden Mission first opened on September 15, 1877 and has kept its doors open ever since, 24 hours per day, a total of over 47,000 consecutive days. This is more than half the time the United States has existed and spans the terms of 25 US presidents beginning with Rutherford B. Hayes. It is the largest continuously operating rescue mission in America, and is one of the oldest organizations in Chicago. All services are free and include overnight shelter; three nutritious daily meals prepared by licensed food handlers; clothing; medical, dental, and eye care; rehabilitation, education/GED/literacy, job training/placement, life skills and Career Development, and Bible program training. When there is a surplus of food, PGM distributes these to the needy in nearby housing projects. |
